Our History
This congregation was established on September 28, 1902 as Woman's Memorial Church with seventeen confirmed members. The organizing pastor was the Rev. Dr. Samuel T. Hallman. The church's first building, located at 133 South Converse Street, was constructed in 1907 at a cost of about $10,000. The congregation sold the South Converse Street building to Spartanburg City Schools in 1942 and purchased the present property on South Pine Street.
The present nave and older buildings were completed in 1949, and the congregation changed the name of the church to St. John's Lutheran Church. The congregation began construction of the educational building and alterations to the older buildings in 1971 and completed those additions in 1972. The new Parish Life Center was completed in 2004.
Currently, St. John's Lutheran Church has over 900 members, and more than 3,000 confirmed members have been listed on the roll since the congregation was organized. Today, 300 members worship regularly at St. John's.
